MEET THE MAKER

Ida Stenberg (born 1990) currently resides in Bergen, Norway, where she is a student at Bergen academy of the arts.

Her earlier artistic work would consist mainly of photography, illustrations and paintings, before later starting to experiment more with textiles and yarn.

She would discover tufting during the summer of 2022, while in bed recovering from a rollerskating related accident that had left her with a broken scapula.

Still wearing a sling she got to work building her first tufting frame from some scrap wood she had accumulated.

She found that the entire tufting process instantly appealed to her. Not only was it extremely enjoyable for her to see her own illustrations become something touchable, she liked the physical labour involved in hours of working in front of the canvas with a heavy power tool, the sound of the carpet clippers buzzing away, perfectly separating one color from the other, even the cleaning ritual after every rug making session she liked, seeing every last piece of yarn, every last little bit of lint getting sucked into the depths of the vacuum cleaner.

Her work is often humorous, sometimes darkly funny or bordering on the absurd. Her work often becomes a place where she is able to entertain bizarre thought experiments and concepts, never shying away from the use of vivid colors to do so.
